Chemical BPA Linked to Obesity in Children

White children exposed to high levels of bisphenol A are five times more likely to be obese than children with low levels, according to a study published today in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The study by New York University scientists is the first to link the chemical to obesity in children. Previous research reported links in adults and animals.

?This is a great example of a health study that is consistent with studies in animals, and it also confirms what we?ve seen in adult populations,? said Frederick vom Saal, a University of Missouri-Columbia professor who studies bisphenol A (BPA) but was not part of the new study. ?That gives the findings much greater weight and strengthens this link we keep seeing between BPA and obesity.?

Traces of BPA ? used in some canned food and beverages, paper receipts and dental sealants ? are found in virtually every U.S. adult and child.

In the study of body mass and BPA data from 2,838 youths aged 6 to 19, only white children were found to have significant increases in obesity prevalence as their BPA levels increased. Those with the highest concentrations in their urine were five times more likely to be obese than children with the lowest levels.

Black children with higher BPA levels were 1.25 times more likely to be obese than those with lower levels, which the scientists said is not statistically significant. Hispanic children had the same rates of obesity at the highest and lowest levels.?

?Neither Hispanic (Mexican American and other Hispanic) or non-Hispanic black children had a significantly increased risk of obesity with elevated concentrations of urinary BPA,? the authors wrote in the journal article.
It is unclear why BPA levels were so strongly associated with obesity in white children.

?There were no dietary differences specific to whites,? said Dr. Leonardo Trasande, an associate professor in pediatrics, environmental medicine and health policy at NYU?s School of Medicine who was lead author of the paper. ?It is possible that there is some genetic interaction that may be specific to the (white) population ... but we don?t know.?

It?s also possible, he said, that higher rates of obesity in the Hispanic and black children ? 23 and 24 percent, respectively, compared with 15 percent of white children ? made it more difficult to tease out a link between the chemicals and obesity in those groups.

Representatives of the chemical industry said the study had too many weaknesses to prove a connection.

Steven Hentges, from the American Chemistry Council's Polycarbonate/BPA Global Group,?said that attempts "to link our national obesity problem to minute exposures to chemicals found in common, everyday products are a distraction from the real efforts underway to address this important national health issue."

The median BPA urinary concentration for children in the study was 2.8 nanograms per milliliter, slightly higher than the median for U.S. adults, according to a 2008 national survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The highest group of children had concentrations at least double that.

Experts suspect that diet is the most frequent route of exposure for children. One study of 257 preschoolers in North Carolina and Ohio found that 99 percent of BPA exposure was through food. But national data is lacking and it is hard to pinpoint exposure since the chemical is in many plastics and other products.

The study adds to the evidence that certain industrial chemicals ? called obesogens ? may be in part spurring the obesity problem in the U.S.

?People are always told if you just stop eating or exercise more, you will lose weight. But there may be more to it ? and I think there is,? said Retha Newbold, a visiting scientist at National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences who specializes in BPA and other endocrine disrupting chemicals.

Cartoons in French weekly fuel Mohammad furor

PARIS (Reuters) - A French magazine ridiculed the Prophet Mohammad on Wednesday by portraying him naked in cartoons, threatening to fuel the anger of Muslims around the world who are already incensed by a film depiction of him as a lecherous fool.

The drawings in satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo risked exacerbating a crisis that has seen the storming of U.S. and other Western embassies, the killing of the U.S. ambassador to Libya and a deadly suicide bombing in Afghanistan.

Riot police were deployed to protect the magazine's Paris offices after it hit the news stands with a cover showing an Orthodox Jew pushing the turbaned figure of Mohammad in a wheelchair.

On the inside pages, several caricatures of the Prophet showed him naked. One, entitled "Mohammad: a star is born", depicted a bearded figure crouching over to display his buttocks and genitals.

The French government, which had urged the weekly not to print the cartoons, said it was temporarily shutting down premises including embassies and schools in 20 countries on Friday, when protests sometimes break out after Muslim prayers.

Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Elaraby called the drawings provocative and outrageous but said those who were offended by them should "use peaceful means to express their firm rejection".

Tunisia's governing Islamist party, Ennahda, condemned the cartoons as an act of "aggression" against Mohammad. It urged Muslims, in responding to it, to avoid falling into a trap designed by "suspicious parties to derail the Arab Spring and turn it into a conflict with the West".

In Lebanon, Salafist cleric Sheikh Nabil Rahim said the incident would raise tensions that were already dangerously high.

"We will try to keep things managed and peaceful, but these things easily get out of hand. I fear there could more targeting of foreigners, and this is why I wish they would not persist with these provocations," he said.

In the northern Paris suburb of Sarcelles, one person was slightly hurt when two masked men threw a small explosive device through the window of a kosher Jewish supermarket, a police source said, adding it was too early to link the incident to the cartoons.

DEADLY PROTESTS

The posting of a short film on YouTube last week that mocked Mohammad as a womanizing buffoon has sparked protests in many countries, some of them deadly.

The U.S. envoy to Libya and three other Americans were killed in an attack in Benghazi, and U.S. and other foreign embassies were stormed in cities in Asia, Africa and the Middle East by furious Muslims. Afghan militants said a suicide bombing that killed 12 people on Tuesday was carried out in retaliation for the film, which was made with private funds in California.

At least four people died last week after hundreds of protesters forced their way into the U.S. embassy in Tunis, ransacking it and burning some of its annexes.

The furor has emerged as an issue in the U.S. presidential election campaign and sparked a wider international debate over free speech, religion and the right to offend. Many Muslims consider any representation of Allah or the Prophet Mohammad blasphemous.

"We have the impression that it's officially allowed for Charlie Hebdo to attack the Catholic far-right but we cannot poke fun at fundamental Islamists," said editor Stephane Charbonnier, who drew the front-page cartoon.

"It shows the climate - everyone is driven by fear, and that is exactly what this small handful of extremists who do not represent anyone want - to make everyone afraid, to shut us all in a cave," he told Reuters.

One cartoon, in reference to the scandal over a French magazine's decision to publish topless photos of the wife of Britain's Prince William, showed a topless, bearded character with the caption: "Riots in Arab countries after photos of Mrs. Mohammad are published."

BEEFED UP SECURITY

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius criticized the magazine's move as a provocation.

"We saw what happened last week in Libya and in other countries such as Afghanistan," Fabius told a regular government news conference. "We have to call on all to behave responsibly."

A Foreign Ministry spokesman said France was closing its embassies, consulates, cultural centers and schools in 20 countries on Friday as a "precautionary measure".

In Egypt, Essam Erian, acting head of the powerful Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, told Reuters: "We reject and condemn the French cartoons that dishonor the Prophet and we condemn any action that defames the sacred according to people's beliefs."

Charlie Hebdo has a long reputation for being provocative. Its Paris offices were firebombed last November after it published a mocking caricature of Mohammad, and Charbonnier has been under police guard ever since.

Speaking outside his offices in an eastern neighborhood with many residents of North African origin, Charbonnier said he had not received any threats over the latest cartoons. In a message on its Twitter account, Charlie Hebdo said its website had been hacked, but referred readers to a blog it also uses.

The French Muslim Council, the main body representing Muslims in France, accused Charlie Hebdo of firing up anti-Muslim sentiment at a sensitive time.

"The CFCM is profoundly worried by this irresponsible act, which in such a fraught climate risks further exacerbating tensions and sparking damaging reactions," it said.

Richard Prasquier, head of the body representing France's Jewish community - Europe's largest - said religious censorship was wrong but added: "Publishing Mohammad cartoons at this time, in the name of freedom, is irresponsible".

In 2005, Danish cartoons of the Prophet sparked a wave of violent protests across the Muslim world that killed at least 50 people.

The decision to temporarily close some embassies comes at a time when France is already on heightened alert over possible attacks by al Qaeda on French interests in West Africa.

A diplomatic source said this week Paris recently foiled attacks on economic and diplomatic targets and had credible evidence that more were planned. "Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb is a direct and immediate threat," the source said.

Separately, French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said the authorities had rejected a request to hold a march against the Mohammad film in Paris.

Social media had circulated calls for a protest on Saturday against the film, after police arrested about 150 people who tried to take part in an unauthorized protest near the U.S. Embassy in Paris last week.

Three players from the Eastern Washington women's soccer team were recognized for their strong performances at the Viking Classic this past weekend (Sept. 7-9) at Hillsboro Stadium in Hillsboro, Ore. Among the All-Tournament team honorees was sophomore forward Cassie Black, sophomore goalkeeper Nathalie Schwery, and junior forward Siara Byers.

Black, from Battle Ground, Wash., was also given the prestigious honor of Offensive MVP of the Viking Classic. She had an impressive showing against Boise State on Sunday (Sept. 9), contributing two goals in 75 minutes of play, which helped Eastern secure a 3-1 win ? its first ever against the Broncos. She put the Eagles on the board at the 20-minute mark with an unassisted goal. In the second half, with only three seconds left on the game clock, Black again broke away for an unassisted goal ? her second of the season, and eighth career goal. She also totaled 57 minutes of play against Utah State on Friday (Sept. 7), tallying three shots with two on goal.

Black has a .615 on goal percentage this season, with 13 total shots and eight on goal. She is Eastern's top point earner, with four this season.

"Cassie is really starting to find her stride," said head coach George Hageage. "When you score six goals as a freshman, you are expected to carry the load as a sophomore, and I think she is finally getting her footing underneath her. She really deserved this honor and did a great job."

Schwery stepped up for her team on Friday (Sept. 7) against Utah State, contributing a career-high 10 saves in 90 minutes of play. The Schuepfheim, Switzerland native had a strong showing between the pipes, only allowing one goal on 17 shot attempts by the Aggies.

On the season, Schwery has recorded 251 total minutes. She has amassed 19 saves for a .826 percentage, and one shutout against Air Force (Aug. 31).

Hailing from Bremerton, Wash., Byers notched her first goal of the season against Boise State. In the 34th minute of play, Byers received a ball in the box and sent it to the back of the net, putting the Eagles up 2-0 against the Broncos. She also played 47 minutes as a starter in Eastern's first game of the tournament against Utah State and recorded one shot on goal in the match.

The Eagles return home this weekend to face Idaho on Friday (Sept. 14) at EWU Sports and Recreation Center Soccer Field in Cheney, Wash. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.

To provide that service, Tesla has also announced that it's nearly tripling its number of service centers, which it says will mean there's a service center within 100 miles of more than 90 percent of Model S reservation holders. What's more, it's also offered some details on what those owners will see in future software updates, including an optional "creep" mode that will mimic the slow, forward roll of a car with an automatic transmission. It?s less of a blog post and more of a comment, but I don?t have a tumblr, and, let?s be honest, this blog is pure self-indulgence nowadays anyway. (sorry, recent followers, but any serious stuff I do in future I?m probably going to try to just guest-post on?asexual agenda. And, given ridiculous lack of free time, that probably won?t be much.)

Out of curiosity, do you know any specific instances of [the word queerplatonic] being in use that way among aromantic non-asexuals? ?The term originated among aromantic asexuals, and in that context it did usually refer specifically to a type of non-romantic and non-sexual relationship, but I could see it being adapted to include sexual but non-romantic relationships. (Although, personally, I think I would rather there be a seperate term, ?as sexual-but-aromantic relationships could be very different from asexual-and-aromantic relationships in terms of structure and implications, so that could be confusing. In addition, when I (as an aromantic) have discussed queerplatonics before, I have always understood it as referring specifically to a non-romantic AND non-sexual relationship.)

Also, at least in the original use of the word, the ?platonic? part was a reference to the usual use of ?platonic? in the asexual community to refer to non-sexual and non-romantic affection, (and which is used more generally to refer to non-sexual and sometimes non-romantic), which makes me think that it really wouldn?t be as useful a term for non-romantic but sexual relationships, as the term platonic means ?non-sexual? in pretty much all modern contexts.?

For example, I conceptualise all my relationships as friendships with elements that are traditionally romantic grafted on. A fuckbuddy relationship is a friendship with elements of sexual partnership attached to it. Let?s call that Element #A.
There?s no clear definition of what elements of romance a queerplatonic relationship adds to friendship. You mention intimacy. Personally, my definition of queerplatonic is less emotional and more utility-based; I would define a queerplatonic relationship as being one which takes friendship and adds to it elements of support structure that are primarily found in romantic relationships- living together, raising children, joint bank accounts, etc, like a Boston Marriage. Let?s call this Element #B.

So, there are words to describe Friendship + Element #A (ie. fuckbuddy). But those words obviously don?t mean Friendship + Element #B. A sexual queerplatonic relatonship is Friendship + Element #A + Element #B. Therefore, trying to find words which mean Friendship + Element #A is utterly?missing the point, when we?re trying to find ways to describe Friendship + Element #A + Element #B in terms of Element #B.?And I know you said yourself that the words don?t really work, but I just wanted to explain why and how much they don?t work- not only do they not accurately describe what we?re talking about, they specifically don?t describe what we?re talking about at all.

So, in conclusion, I think that sexual queerplatonic relationships are the same as non-sexual queerplatonic relationships in regards to their queerplatonicness. Just like, I dunno, same-sex queerplatonic relationships are as queerplatonic as opposite-sex, or long-distance queerplatonic relationships are just as queerplatonic as close, or whatever other factors you want to put in which are irrelevant to the fundamental meaning of queerplatonic, which is Friendship + Element #B.

HAVING SAID THAT, and established that we?re all talking about the same things, we then enter the semantics we?re using to talk about it. I?m using the word queerplatonic here as shorthand for Friendship + Element #B, and it?s possible that it just doesn?t mean that. I tend to adopt the ace word without thinking about how it was actually put together. There?s definitely an argument from etymology that queerplatonic means ?a non-sexual (ie. platonic) relationship that doesn?t obey the allosexist assumptions.? In which case, the literal meaning is Friendship /+ Element #A, the meaning it has come to have through use may be Friendship + Element #B /+ Element #A, and it may be too much to shift that word into just meaning Friendship + Element #B, because it contradicts the plain and obvious meaning of the word. I really don?t like that, because words like queerplatonic are really important, and I don?t like having them taken from me on technicality. My preferred interpretation involves a 21st century reconstruction of the original Platonic relationship, which was, as far as I understand it, non-romantic but anything else you wanted, often including sexual (but weighed down with all the crap the Ancient Greeks believe, like the inherent supremacy of men, and shame of sexual passivity and pedophilia). It?s probably not the spirit the word queerplatonic was created in, though. Which sucks, because allosexual people really need words for this, and, trust me, we?re going through the same things as you.

Work with germ-killing copper could save thousands of lives

ScienceDaily (Sep. 7, 2012) ? When Adam Estelle graduated from the University of Arizona's materials science and engineering program four years ago, he had no idea he would be involved in saving thousands of lives.

Like most graduates, he was just hoping to find a job -- preferably in Tucson, Ariz., because he wasn't interested in big-city life. What happened next was a job offer from the Copper Development Association in New York City.

Fast-forward four years, and Estelle says, "I love New York more and more every day. And the most rewarding thing for me is the ability to work on a project centered on a technology that will save lives. That's immensely rewarding."

The technology is based on copper alloys that kill bacteria, fungi and viruses. The metals can be fashioned into everything from IV poles to sinks to bed rails -- just about anything that is frequently touched in hospitals.

While these surfaces might look benign, they're covered with organisms that contribute to hospital-acquired infections, the fourth leading cause of death in the United States, killing more people than AIDS and breast cancer combined. That's 2 million infections annually, and 100,000 deaths -- one infection for every 20 people admitted to hospitals.

While disease-causing organisms can lurk on stainless steel surfaces for two weeks, according to a recent UA research study, 99.9 percent die within two hours on surfaces that contain at least 60 percent copper, Estelle says.

Estelle has been working with four other engineers at the Copper Development Association, a not-for-profit trade group, to develop a market for copper alloys in the health care industry. They also have been helping manufacturers gear up for producing copper alloy products.

Part of that effort has involved gaining EPA certification for the antimicrobial effects of copper so manufacturers can advertise the health benefits of these products.

The second part, which has been Estelle's major focus for the past two years, was to retrofit the Ronald McDonald House in Charleston, S.C., with copper alloy stair railings, door hardware, sinks, faucets, counter tops, kitchen tables, chair arms, and other surfaces that are frequently touched by patients, visitors and staff.

This has been a win-win for everyone, Estelle explained, creating a safer environment for families and children, while at the same time helping the first wave of manufacturers tool up and commercialize lines of copper products that can now be marketed to hospitals.

"One of our first commercial products is a beautiful seamless counter top and sink bowl manufactured by Elkay Commercial Products," Estelle said. "We installed about forty of these in the Ronald McDonald House." Elkay is among ten manufacturers now marketing antimicrobial copper alloy products to the health care industry.

Surfaces at the Ronald McDonald House were swabbed and tested for bacteria for ten weeks before the new copper alloy products were installed. "Follow-up tests on the items converted to copper showed they carried 94 percent fewer bacteria," Estelle said. "We are now trying to recreate the Charleston project at other Ronald McDonald Houses around the world to create a safer living and working environment for the children, families and staff."

Now, with the Ronald McDonald House pilot project completed and EPA approval secured, the next step is to convince hospitals to replace traditional surfaces that are not worn out with copper alloy ones. New policies from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services that go into effect next year should help spur this changeover. Treatment for hospital-acquired infections costs between $35 billion and $45 billion each year in the U.S., and Medicare and Medicaid will no long reimburse hospitals for that treatment if the infections are judged to have been preventable and a hospital mistake.

But even without the new rules, the changeover makes economic sense, Estelle explained. Under today's reimbursement system, individual hospitals spend $5 million on average each year to treat infections. "Even on the low end, it's $30,000 per infection," he said. Clinical trials at three hospitals funded by the U.S. Department of Defense have recently proved that copper surfaces can reduce infections in the intensive care unit by more than 50 percent.

Using published estimates, about 500,000 Americans will contract an infection this year in the ICU. This will cost our hospitals an additional $3.5 billion in treatment, and about 40,000 people will not survive the ordeal. The clinical trial results suggest that installing copper surfaces could cut these figures in half.

"By implementing these surfaces, hospitals can see real, continuous savings year after year," Estelle said. "This is a passive way to prevent infection that doesn't depend on human behavior, such as hand-washing or hydrogen peroxide vapor machines. There is no need for maintenance beyond the normal surface cleaning procedures that are already in place."

Working for a small company that is on the leading edge of developing a new market has been rewarding and challenging, Estelle said. While his engineering courses didn't teach all the skills he's needed, the problem-solving techniques he learned at UA certainly have helped.

"I get involved in everything from supply chain development and marketing to clinical trials, regulatory approvals, Congressional advocacy, and more," Estelle said. "This is really a multidisciplinary job, and a lot of it is business-oriented. There's a lot of on-the-job networking, and interfacing with different professionals."

"But the most rewarding thing for me is the ability to work on a project that centers on technology that will save lives," he said. "I'm a pretty lucky guy."

Study has organic food industry digging in

NBC's Diana Alvear reports on a new study from Stanford University that questions the health advantages of organic products over conventional food, showing that there were no specific foods or fruits that display significant differences.

For the record, that?s $2.99 per pound vs. $2.49 per pound ?- the price difference between organic apples and regular, store-brand apples (as marked this week at a Denver Whole Foods store).

Thanks to new research released this week by Stanford University, consumers now know that all of those sweet, red pieces of fruit ? no matter how naturally or conventionally they were grown, and no matter how they are labeled ? carry the exact same nutritional value.

Forget: "Paper or plastic?" The question now: Will this revelation take a bite out of the $31 billion organic food industry?

?We really don't know what that impact is going to look like," said Christine Bushway, chief executive officer of the Organic Trade Association, which represents more over 6,500 organic businesses across 49 states, from growers to importers to retailers. "What we do know about our dedicated organic consumer is, this will not likely be an ?aha!? moment for them.

?For the most part, they?re not buying organic because of some nutrient density claim. They?re buying organic for the things that they?re avoiding: pesticides, hormones and antibiotics,? Bushway said. ?The whole idea of looking at organic from a nutritional advantageous position ? that?s never been organic?s claim to fame, frankly.?

While perceived richer nourishment may not be the dominant driver of organic sales, it is ranked highly among shoppers? reasons for paying extra for organic chow. According to a 2010 report by Nielsen, 51 percent of consumers said they choose organic products because ?they are more nutritious.? Only two psychological factors scored higher: Organic fare is seen as "healthier,? (according to 76 percent of consumers), and organic cuisine allows people to ?avoid pesticides,? (according to 53 percent of consumers).

Which brings up another slightly bitter pill for organic sellers and lovers: the Stanford researchers found that not all organic fruits, veggies and meats are entirely free of pesticides or antibiotic-resistant bacteria, although the levels of such chemicals are far lower?and their presence is far more rare?when compared to conventionally farmed produce, chicken and pork. (Federal rules prohibit organic farms from using synthetic pesticides, but experts explain that some bug-killing vapors are known to drift from non-organic farm fields onto organic plots).?

If the nutritional equality between so-called "clean" food and traditional grocery items wasn't headline news to some shoppers, how about the researchers' detection of pesticide residue in seven percent of the organic produce samples?

"You may have hit on something that needs some more clarification with the consumer," Bushway said. "That?s exactly what we?re talking about right now: How can we get more information out there to the consumer about organic? It?s a maturing industry. I think that it is recognizing in this really incredible growth it?s having, like all things, you don?t just put products into a marketplace and hope they sell themselves. The consumer wants product information.

"So I would say we have a further job to do in that area."?

The first salvo in that push back came Tuesday when the Organic Trade Association issued a news release reacting to the Stanford report, opening with how the California scientists "confirmed that consuming organic foods reduces consumers' exposure to pesticide residues and to bacteria-resistant antibiotics." Then the OTA squarely acknowledged that "published literature lacks broad evidence that organic foods are significantly more nutritious than conventional foods." But, they emphasized, organic foods do tend to be higher in levels of omega-3 fatty acids (good for the heart) and phenols (thought to prevent cancer).?

Still one other assertion should be examined, however: namely that organic food - which costs, on average, 15 to 20 percent more than conventional fare - is enjoying "really incredible growth," as Bushway maintains.?

Indeed, that sort of organic sales surge did occur during the past decade. But is that trendy corner of the grocery store still expanding at the same pace? According to?the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the retail value of the organic industry sprouted by almost 9.5 percent in 2011, to $31.4 billion. In 2010, organics comprised 4.2 percent of all U.S. retail food sales, the federal agency also reported. ?

The USDA, by the way, ensures that not just any jar of mushrooms can be slapped with an "organic" label, thus allowing some sort of artificial boom fueled by false advertising. For a food item to be stamped "organic," 95 percent of the product must be made with certified organic agricultural ingredients, says the?USDA. Foods containing less than 70 percent organic ingredients are prohibited from using the word "organic" on labels.

Despite the USDA's report of a nearly 10 percent growth in the sector last year, one food industry analyst believes that number is something of an inflationary mirage and, further, that the organic market already has hit its chic peak.?

"I believe the market has grown because of pricing actions ? because the price of organic food has gone up, because all food prices have gone up. But that?s different from eating (more), or from tonnage consumed," said Harry?Balzer, chief industry analyst and vice president of the NPD Group. The firm, based in Port Washington, N.Y., provides consumer and retail information to industries working with manufacturers, retailers, and service companies. Balzer also authors an annual report called "Eating Patterns in America."

Since 1980, the NPD group has asked 5,000 consumers to keep weekly food and beverage diaries for everything they swallow during every two-week period. And by Balzer's assessment of those logs, the consumption of organic foods has "leveled," following an abrupt explosion between 2003 (when 12 percent of consumers ate an organic item at least once during a two-week span) to 2008 when that practice reached 26 percent of consumers.?

"And then it stopped, which coincided with the recession. We all said it probably has to do with economics - because of the cost (of organic foods)," Balzer said. "For the last four years, that number has not been moving.?

"The one thing you must know about our eating habits is we are always looking for new things, and we wear food like we wear clothes," he added. "Food makes a statement about who we are. Food is fashion."

While peering into the soul of American consumers, Balzer has learned, he said, that we have two?long-term, core values when it comes to buying any grocery item: "One,?does it make my life easier? And two, and does it make my food costs cheaper?

"So when I saw the issue (out of Stanford) on the organic thing, I had a little smile on my face because I?ve been watching this trend. For over 35 years, I?ve been watching how people eat. This is my life," Balzer said. "The organic market makes a statement about who you are, what you value.?

"But it doesn?t serve the two basic needs of making your life easier or making your food cheaper. So, it has a limited market."
