Watch young Ryan Gosling tell Canada about his 'Mickey Mouse Club' role

young-ryan-gosling-canada-am.jpgRyan Gosling has always been adorable. Want proof? Check out a clip of a 12-year-old Baby Goose appearing on the Canadian morning show "Canada AM."

Wearing the most '90s outfit ever -- a denim shirt with a patterned tie -- and introduced with the most '90s B-roll ever, Gosling tells Canada all about his new gig as a "Mickey Mouse Club" Mouseketeer.

What did 'lil Gosling do when he found out he'd landed the part? "I hit the roof, it was so funny!"

Ever the Canadian, Gosling has nothing but nice things to say about the Disney as he describes the singing, dancing and acting involved in his audition.

When the interviewer asks him to perform for her (and the nation), he politely declines, having perfected the art of the tease. "There has to be some sort of surprise, so I'll let you watch the show," he says.

Check out little Gosling below at your own risk. Warning: You might squeal at the cuteness.

UNHCR | Refworld | As violence continues in Syria, UNICEF ...

Efforts to assist the growing numbers of displaced children in Syria are continuing despite the escalating violence across the country and a large funding gap, the United Nations Children?s Fund (UNICEF) announced today.

Addressing a media briefing in Geneva, a UNICEF spokesperson, Marixie Mercado, reported that on-the-ground efforts to provide displaced families from the cities of Aleppo and Homs with supplies were ongoing, noting that the UN agency had already distributed family hygiene kits for 30,000 people, baby hygiene kits for 2,000, children?s winter clothes for 2,000 and the home-schooling education set known as ?school-in-a-bag? for 5,000.

More than 20,000 people, mostly civilians, have died in Syria since the uprising against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad began some 20 months ago. A further 2.5 million Syrians urgently need humanitarian aid, and over 340,000 have crossed the border to Syria?s neighbouring countries, according to UN estimates.

Ms. Mercado pointed out that while the last estimate of displaced children in Syria was 600,000, though the numbers had grown since then.

In addition, almost 67 per cent of Syria?s public hospitals have been affected as a result of the conflict, and half of the country?s ambulances have been the subject of attack, leaving many of them out of service, according to UN World Health Organization (WHO). Vehicles transporting vaccinations have also been damaged, affecting the implementation of a national immunization programme.

Ms. Mercado told the gathered journalists that UNICEF-supported mobile health centres were also transporting critical health and nutrition support to displaced families across conflict-affected areas of the country. Moreover, she noted that doctors, teachers, youth and social workers were being trained and provided with supplies to assist children with psychosocial support.

The UNICEF spokesperson warned, however, that the agency?s efforts in Syria were facing a funding gap of close to $90 million out of a $132 million appeal.

Addressing the same news briefing, a spokesperson for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Jens Laerke, said that the effects of the almost two year-long conflict had devastated the Syrian economy with gross domestic product reportedly falling by three per cent in 2011 compared to the previous year, and inflation topping 36 per cent in July of 2012.

Data provided by the country?s Central Bank, he noted, also suggested that unemployment across the country had shot up from 8.6 per cent in 2010 to 14.9 per cent in 2011.

?All these factors combined with the on-going hostilities have humanitarian consequences that OCHA is trying to address,? he added.

Jobs in the Health and Fitness Industry - Carlsbad, CA Patch

With the continued rise of diabetes, heart disease and obesity, there will also be a demand for dietitians and nutritionists. To work effectively in this field, you need to have an undergraduate degree followed by a master?s degree specializing in exercise science or nutrition. In most states there is a license process and state exam you must take in order to be a registered dietitian. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the projected median salary for a nutrition job will go from $57,000 to $62,000 by 2016. People who enjoy working with people and helping them meet their nutrition goals for improved health may find this to be a very rewarding career path.

Another credible career path in health and wellness, is becoming a holistic practitioner.?This could include acupuncture, massage therapy, chiropractic care,?naturopathic doctor?and other forms of holistic medicine. Each type of practitioner is expected to complete their formal education based on the individual field of interest. For example, not all acupuncture and massage therapy school requires a bachelor's degree, but do require certain prerequisites to get in. Chiropractic and naturopathic doctors both require a bachelor's degree as well as a doctoral program in their specialized fields. Salaries are based on which field you go into and how many patients you have. For example, the average massage therapist working 15 hours a week earns around $30,000 a year, while chiropractors?earned a median salary of $67,000 in 2010 working full time. Income in the holistic field of medicine fluctuates based on location, experience, and how many hours you are able to book patients.

Becoming a personal trainer is a popular choice for college-age adults and people who are looking for a second or part-time career. There are many different programs that can certify you to become a personal trainer. Most of the recognized personal training certifications only require a high school diploma and a CPR/first aid card and for the individual to be 18 years old. You can take the courses online or live classes. If you are interested in becoming a personal trainer at a gym, it?s a good idea to find out what type of certification they recognize or accept at their gym. Personal trainers make around $30,000 a year but that does depend on who your clients are, how many hours you work and your reputation. One positive note about becoming a personal trainer is that it?s projected to continue to be a fast growing occupation with opportunities for employment long term.

It appears that health and wellness is not going out of style, so if you are interested in joining this industry, get started in the field that is right for you.

Acer see sales decline in Q3 2012 as customers hold out for Windows 8

Acer has reported a net profit of NT$68 million ($2.3 million) for Q3 of this year, ducking far below many estimates for the Taipei computer maker. According to Reuters, the company isn't offering up any reasons why profits disappointed just yet, and it plans to hold a briefing on Thursday to add more detail on the figures and its outlook. The reported results, currently unavailable direct from Acer, note that consolidated revenue in the third quarter was down 5.6 percent since Q2, although its after-tax profit has improved since then. It's a difficult time to be a PC maker.

DALLAS (AP) ? A mother who admitted to beating her 2-year-old daughter and gluing the child's hands made a plea for leniency Wednesday, saying she was no longer the "monster" who committed the attack.

"I will never forgive myself for what I did to my own daughter," said Elizabeth Escalona, who pleaded guilty in July to felony injury to a child.

Police say Escalona lost her temper last year with Jocelyn Cedillo over potty training problems. Escalona beat and kicked Jocelyn before sticking her hands to an apartment wall using an adhesive commonly known as Super Glue. The child was hospitalized for days.

Judge Larry Mitchell has a wide range in choosing Escalona's sentence: Anything from probation to life in prison is possible. Prosecutors are asking for a 45-year sentence.

Defense attorney Angie N'Duka asked Escalona what she thought of photos that prosecutors presented earlier this week showing her daughter's injuries.

"Only a monster does that," Escalona responded.

N'Duka then asked Escalona whether she thought she was a monster. "When that happened, I was," Escalona replied.

Escalona asked Mitchell for an opportunity to show she had changed, adding that she would accept any sentence as fair.

"I want everybody to know I'm not a monster," Escalona said. "I love my kids."

Escalona admitted to hitting and kicking her daughter but said she didn't recall why she did it.

Prosecutors have portrayed Escalona as an unfit mother with a history of violence. They have played recordings in which Escalona as a teenager threatened to kill her mother. They said she was a former gang member who started smoking marijuana at age 11.

Her sentencing hearing is scheduled to resume Thursday.

Jocelyn suffered bleeding in her brain, a fractured rib, multiple bruises and bite marks, and was in a coma for a couple of days. Some skin had been torn off her hands, where doctors also found glue residue and white paint chips from the apartment wall, witnesses testified.

Escalona's family has acknowledged their dismay and anger following the attack, but both her mother and sister asked the judge for leniency.

"I wanted an explanation," said Margaret Escalona, her sister. "I wanted to know what happened. I wanted to beat my sister up."

Ofelia Escalona, Elizabeth's mother, said her daughter hit her as a child, but she also said Elizabeth was abused growing up. Both Ofelia and Margaret Escalona argued that Elizabeth needed more help and not prison.

"Her being taken away won't help any," Margaret Escalona said.

Counselor Melanie Davis testified Wednesday that she believes from the conversations she has had with Elizabeth Escalona that the mother loves her five children, one of whom was born after the attack. Davis said she has been counseling Escalona since June, nine months after her arrest.

Escalona has set herself the short-term goals of finding a job and furthering her education and the long-term aim of getting her kids back, Davis testified. She added that Escalona "is need of further counseling services."

Ofelia Escalona now takes care of Elizabeth Escalona's five children, including one child born earlier this year, after the attack took place.

ABC's 'Nashville' Presents Icons: Bowie & Gaga, Freddie & Adam ...

Iconic Artists And The Singers They've Influenced

With tonight?s (October 10) kickoff of ABC?s Nashville ??a series that explores the lives of country music veteran Rayna James (played by Connie Britton) and determined up-and-coming ingenue Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panettiere) ? we decided to take a closer look at the thin line between some of pop?s icons and the current crop of singers they?ve inspired.

We start our examination by highlighting the parallels between heartthrobs Justin Timberlake and Justin Bieber, two men (yes, Bieber?s a man now) who?ve collectively made music-lovers? tickers go pitter-pat over the past 15 years.

Next up we point out the unmistakeable similarities between strutting Queen frontman Freddie Mercury and yowling American Idol alum Adam Lambert. The obvious connection between the two is not something that was lost on Queen?s surviving members Brian May and Roger Taylor, as they?ve enlisted Adam to perform on stage with them several times.

We also delve into the influence rock?s great chameleon David Bowie has had on Lady Gaga?s career. From their respective androgynous stage personas to their theatrical performances, the Thin White Duke and Mother Monster have mastered the art of capturing the attention ? and the imagination ? of the masses.

Watch our look at these pop icons the artists who look up to them above, and tune in to Nashville on ABC tonight, at 10 p.m. EST.

Chemical BPA Linked to Obesity in Children

White children exposed to high levels of bisphenol A are five times more likely to be obese than peers with low levels of the chemical, according to new research

White children exposed to high levels of bisphenol A are five times more likely to be obese than children with low levels, according to a study published today in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The study by New York University scientists is the first to link the chemical to obesity in children. Previous research reported links in adults and animals.

?This is a great example of a health study that is consistent with studies in animals, and it also confirms what we?ve seen in adult populations,? said Frederick vom Saal, a University of Missouri-Columbia professor who studies bisphenol A (BPA) but was not part of the new study. ?That gives the findings much greater weight and strengthens this link we keep seeing between BPA and obesity.?

Traces of BPA ? used in some canned food and beverages, paper receipts and dental sealants ? are found in virtually every U.S. adult and child.

In the study of body mass and BPA data from 2,838 youths aged 6 to 19, only white children were found to have significant increases in obesity prevalence as their BPA levels increased. Those with the highest concentrations in their urine were five times more likely to be obese than children with the lowest levels.

Black children with higher BPA levels were 1.25 times more likely to be obese than those with lower levels, which the scientists said is not statistically significant. Hispanic children had the same rates of obesity at the highest and lowest levels.?

?Neither Hispanic (Mexican American and other Hispanic) or non-Hispanic black children had a significantly increased risk of obesity with elevated concentrations of urinary BPA,? the authors wrote in the journal article.
It is unclear why BPA levels were so strongly associated with obesity in white children.

?There were no dietary differences specific to whites,? said Dr. Leonardo Trasande, an associate professor in pediatrics, environmental medicine and health policy at NYU?s School of Medicine who was lead author of the paper. ?It is possible that there is some genetic interaction that may be specific to the (white) population ... but we don?t know.?

It?s also possible, he said, that higher rates of obesity in the Hispanic and black children ? 23 and 24 percent, respectively, compared with 15 percent of white children ? made it more difficult to tease out a link between the chemicals and obesity in those groups.

Representatives of the chemical industry said the study had too many weaknesses to prove a connection.

Steven Hentges, from the American Chemistry Council's Polycarbonate/BPA Global Group,?said that attempts "to link our national obesity problem to minute exposures to chemicals found in common, everyday products are a distraction from the real efforts underway to address this important national health issue."

The median BPA urinary concentration for children in the study was 2.8 nanograms per milliliter, slightly higher than the median for U.S. adults, according to a 2008 national survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The highest group of children had concentrations at least double that.

Experts suspect that diet is the most frequent route of exposure for children. One study of 257 preschoolers in North Carolina and Ohio found that 99 percent of BPA exposure was through food. But national data is lacking and it is hard to pinpoint exposure since the chemical is in many plastics and other products.

The study adds to the evidence that certain industrial chemicals ? called obesogens ? may be in part spurring the obesity problem in the U.S.

?People are always told if you just stop eating or exercise more, you will lose weight. But there may be more to it ? and I think there is,? said Retha Newbold, a visiting scientist at National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences who specializes in BPA and other endocrine disrupting chemicals.

Sony Xperia T for AT&T achieves FCC victory

Sony Xperia T for AT&T achieves FCC victory

We witnessed the Sony Xperia T make its way through the FCC approval process a few days ago, but there was still something drastically missing: compatibility with AT&T LTE. But as some images published by UK retailer Phones4U attested to, we figured it was only a matter of time. Now that time has come, as the FCC pushed through the Xperia Mint Amy LT30at (the global Xperia T is the Mint Rita LT30p, if you're keeping track) today. Not only does the Amy sport the requisite AT&T-friendly bands (4 and 17, with support for bands 2 and 5 as well), some of the docs specifically call this device out as the AT&T version. We've always admired Sony's bluntness around FCC docs when other manufacturers attempt to hide as much information as possible. To do some digging of your own, have a look-see at the source link.

Cartoons in French weekly fuel Mohammad furor

PARIS (Reuters) - A French magazine ridiculed the Prophet Mohammad on Wednesday by portraying him naked in cartoons, threatening to fuel the anger of Muslims around the world who are already incensed by a film depiction of him as a lecherous fool.

The drawings in satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo risked exacerbating a crisis that has seen the storming of U.S. and other Western embassies, the killing of the U.S. ambassador to Libya and a deadly suicide bombing in Afghanistan.

Riot police were deployed to protect the magazine's Paris offices after it hit the news stands with a cover showing an Orthodox Jew pushing the turbaned figure of Mohammad in a wheelchair.

On the inside pages, several caricatures of the Prophet showed him naked. One, entitled "Mohammad: a star is born", depicted a bearded figure crouching over to display his buttocks and genitals.

The French government, which had urged the weekly not to print the cartoons, said it was temporarily shutting down premises including embassies and schools in 20 countries on Friday, when protests sometimes break out after Muslim prayers.

Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Elaraby called the drawings provocative and outrageous but said those who were offended by them should "use peaceful means to express their firm rejection".

Tunisia's governing Islamist party, Ennahda, condemned the cartoons as an act of "aggression" against Mohammad. It urged Muslims, in responding to it, to avoid falling into a trap designed by "suspicious parties to derail the Arab Spring and turn it into a conflict with the West".

In Lebanon, Salafist cleric Sheikh Nabil Rahim said the incident would raise tensions that were already dangerously high.

"We will try to keep things managed and peaceful, but these things easily get out of hand. I fear there could more targeting of foreigners, and this is why I wish they would not persist with these provocations," he said.

In the northern Paris suburb of Sarcelles, one person was slightly hurt when two masked men threw a small explosive device through the window of a kosher Jewish supermarket, a police source said, adding it was too early to link the incident to the cartoons.

DEADLY PROTESTS

The posting of a short film on YouTube last week that mocked Mohammad as a womanizing buffoon has sparked protests in many countries, some of them deadly.

The U.S. envoy to Libya and three other Americans were killed in an attack in Benghazi, and U.S. and other foreign embassies were stormed in cities in Asia, Africa and the Middle East by furious Muslims. Afghan militants said a suicide bombing that killed 12 people on Tuesday was carried out in retaliation for the film, which was made with private funds in California.

At least four people died last week after hundreds of protesters forced their way into the U.S. embassy in Tunis, ransacking it and burning some of its annexes.

The furor has emerged as an issue in the U.S. presidential election campaign and sparked a wider international debate over free speech, religion and the right to offend. Many Muslims consider any representation of Allah or the Prophet Mohammad blasphemous.

"We have the impression that it's officially allowed for Charlie Hebdo to attack the Catholic far-right but we cannot poke fun at fundamental Islamists," said editor Stephane Charbonnier, who drew the front-page cartoon.

"It shows the climate - everyone is driven by fear, and that is exactly what this small handful of extremists who do not represent anyone want - to make everyone afraid, to shut us all in a cave," he told Reuters.

One cartoon, in reference to the scandal over a French magazine's decision to publish topless photos of the wife of Britain's Prince William, showed a topless, bearded character with the caption: "Riots in Arab countries after photos of Mrs. Mohammad are published."

BEEFED UP SECURITY

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius criticized the magazine's move as a provocation.

"We saw what happened last week in Libya and in other countries such as Afghanistan," Fabius told a regular government news conference. "We have to call on all to behave responsibly."

A Foreign Ministry spokesman said France was closing its embassies, consulates, cultural centers and schools in 20 countries on Friday as a "precautionary measure".

In Egypt, Essam Erian, acting head of the powerful Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, told Reuters: "We reject and condemn the French cartoons that dishonor the Prophet and we condemn any action that defames the sacred according to people's beliefs."

Charlie Hebdo has a long reputation for being provocative. Its Paris offices were firebombed last November after it published a mocking caricature of Mohammad, and Charbonnier has been under police guard ever since.

Speaking outside his offices in an eastern neighborhood with many residents of North African origin, Charbonnier said he had not received any threats over the latest cartoons. In a message on its Twitter account, Charlie Hebdo said its website had been hacked, but referred readers to a blog it also uses.

The French Muslim Council, the main body representing Muslims in France, accused Charlie Hebdo of firing up anti-Muslim sentiment at a sensitive time.

"The CFCM is profoundly worried by this irresponsible act, which in such a fraught climate risks further exacerbating tensions and sparking damaging reactions," it said.

Richard Prasquier, head of the body representing France's Jewish community - Europe's largest - said religious censorship was wrong but added: "Publishing Mohammad cartoons at this time, in the name of freedom, is irresponsible".

In 2005, Danish cartoons of the Prophet sparked a wave of violent protests across the Muslim world that killed at least 50 people.

The decision to temporarily close some embassies comes at a time when France is already on heightened alert over possible attacks by al Qaeda on French interests in West Africa.

A diplomatic source said this week Paris recently foiled attacks on economic and diplomatic targets and had credible evidence that more were planned. "Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb is a direct and immediate threat," the source said.

Separately, French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said the authorities had rejected a request to hold a march against the Mohammad film in Paris.

Social media had circulated calls for a protest on Saturday against the film, after police arrested about 150 people who tried to take part in an unauthorized protest near the U.S. Embassy in Paris last week.

EWU SOCCER: Three Eagles Earn All-Tournament Honors - SWX ...

by EWU Athletics

Three players from the Eastern Washington women's soccer team were recognized for their strong performances at the Viking Classic this past weekend (Sept. 7-9) at Hillsboro Stadium in Hillsboro, Ore. Among the All-Tournament team honorees was sophomore forward Cassie Black, sophomore goalkeeper Nathalie Schwery, and junior forward Siara Byers.

Black, from Battle Ground, Wash., was also given the prestigious honor of Offensive MVP of the Viking Classic. She had an impressive showing against Boise State on Sunday (Sept. 9), contributing two goals in 75 minutes of play, which helped Eastern secure a 3-1 win ? its first ever against the Broncos. She put the Eagles on the board at the 20-minute mark with an unassisted goal. In the second half, with only three seconds left on the game clock, Black again broke away for an unassisted goal ? her second of the season, and eighth career goal. She also totaled 57 minutes of play against Utah State on Friday (Sept. 7), tallying three shots with two on goal.

Black has a .615 on goal percentage this season, with 13 total shots and eight on goal. She is Eastern's top point earner, with four this season.

"Cassie is really starting to find her stride," said head coach George Hageage. "When you score six goals as a freshman, you are expected to carry the load as a sophomore, and I think she is finally getting her footing underneath her. She really deserved this honor and did a great job."

Schwery stepped up for her team on Friday (Sept. 7) against Utah State, contributing a career-high 10 saves in 90 minutes of play. The Schuepfheim, Switzerland native had a strong showing between the pipes, only allowing one goal on 17 shot attempts by the Aggies.

On the season, Schwery has recorded 251 total minutes. She has amassed 19 saves for a .826 percentage, and one shutout against Air Force (Aug. 31).

Hailing from Bremerton, Wash., Byers notched her first goal of the season against Boise State. In the 34th minute of play, Byers received a ball in the box and sent it to the back of the net, putting the Eagles up 2-0 against the Broncos. She also played 47 minutes as a starter in Eastern's first game of the tournament against Utah State and recorded one shot on goal in the match.

The Eagles return home this weekend to face Idaho on Friday (Sept. 14) at EWU Sports and Recreation Center Soccer Field in Cheney, Wash. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.

Tesla details service plans, software updates for Model S

So you drop $50,000+ on a Tesla Model S -- then what? The all-electric automaker offered some more details on what folks can expect in the ensuing years on its blog this week, detailing service plans and software updates, and what it'll all cost. On that latter point, you can expect to pay $600 for a basic one-year service plan, or opt for a four-year package that'll set you back $1900 -- on-site visits are available for an extra $100, or as part of a four-year, $2400 plan that includes unlimited on-site visits. To provide that service, Tesla has also announced that it's nearly tripling its number of service centers, which it says will mean there's a service center within 100 miles of more than 90 percent of Model S reservation holders. What's more, it's also offered some details on what those owners will see in future software updates, including an optional "creep" mode that will mimic the slow, forward roll of a car with an automatic transmission. You can find more details and a full list of service centers at the links below.

The Best Food for your Best Friend ? Homemade Dog Food | Kissed ...

Home Made Dog Food. So may people would wonder why anyone would make food for their dogs at home, while there are so many nutritional products at the local pet store. There are ?natural? foods, ?diet? formulas and a multitude of other products on the market. So one of them is perfect for your dog right?

Well, maybe.

To answer that let me pose this question to you. Would you buy food for your children in a bulk bag, feed them the same thing each day, knowing it was full of chemicals, preservatives, and filler? Would you assume that it would meet all of their nutritional requirements and that it would never change? Of course not.As a parent I know that the nutritional needs of my children vary depending on age, health, as well as many other factors. As a dog lover and owner I know the same thing. I have two dogs whose needs are very different.

Dogs were historically outside animals, used for farming, and working. They were fed scraps left over, and died young. Just as human medicine has evolved, so has veterinary medicine, and dogs today are living longer, healthier and happier lives. Dogs have gone from pets that lived outside, and were often only used for home protection, and entertaining the children to full fledged family members. They have a place in our homes, sleep on our beds, get their own Christmas presents, and are there to comfort us. They love us unconditionally. So doesn?t it make sense, that we should feed them and care for them as much as we do the members of our family?

I love my dogs as part of my family, and want only the best for them. One way is through Homemade Dog food. With just a small amount of time a week, you can provide your dog a diet, not full of filler, but balanced to their individual needs, and activity. You can provide them fresh nutrition, and fresh fruits and vegetables.

Director Mark Wexler embarks on a worldwide trek to investigate just what it means to grow old and what it could mean to really live forever. But whose advice should he take? Does 94-year-old exercise guru Jack LaLanne have all the answers, or does Buster, a 103-year-old chain-smoking, beer-drinking marathoner? What about futurist Ray Kurzweil, a laughter yoga expert, or an elder porn star? Wexler explores the viewpoints of delightfully unusual characters alongside those of health, fitness and life-extension experts in this engaging new documentary, which challenges our notions of youth and aging with comic poignancy. Begun as a study in life-extension, How To Live Forever evolves into a thought-provoking examination of what truly gives life meaning.
